Electromagnets vs Permanent Magnets: Differences and Uses
Big Magnets and Little Magnets: What's the Difference?
Table of Contents

What is an Electromagnet?
An electromagnet is a special magnet. It only works when it has power. Think of a light bulb. It only works with electricity.
- It has wire wrapped around metal. Like a coil.
- When power goes through the wire, it makes a magnetic field.
- You can turn it on and off.
- You can make it stronger or weaker. You change the power.
We call the wire a solenoid coil. The metal inside is the core. Iron and steel are good for the core. These are ferromagnetic materials.
Electromagnets are used for:
- Big machines that pick up metal.
- Machines that show us the insides of our body! This called, Magnetic Resonance Imaging or (MRI) machine magnets.
- Helping to separate differnt types of metals in a recycling plant!
What is a Permanent Magnet?
A permanent magnet is different. It is always a magnet!
- It does not need power.
- You cannot turn it off.
- The magnetic field and magnetic flux density is always there.
- Neodymium magnets (NdFeB) are a very strong kind. We are a Neodymium Magnets Factory.
We use permanent magnets for many things:
- Electric motors
- Speakers in your TV and phone, or any audio equipment.
- Toys
- Computers
- Helping keep our planet healthy in wind turbines and electric cars.
How Are They Different?
Here’s a table to show the big differences:
Electromagnet | Permanent Magnet (NdFeB) | |
---|---|---|
Needs Power? | Yes! | No! |
Can Turn Off? | Yes! | No! |
Change Strength? | Yes! | No! The retentivity is set. |
How Long? | Not as long (5-10 years) | A long time! (20+ years) |
Cost | Costs less to buy, but more to use. | Costs more to buy, but cheaper to use. |
Electromagnets need power to work. Think of a light that only works with electricity. Permanent magnets are always working. Like a toy that sticks to the fridge.
You can change the power of an electromagnet. More power makes it stronger. Less power makes it weaker. You cannot change a permanent magnet. Permanent magnet longevity is very long!
Electromagnets don’t last as long, this is beause of Hysteresis loss. Permanent magnets last for many years, because of demagnetization resistance!
Super Neodymium Magnets (NdFeB)
NdFeB magnets are super! We make them! They are the strongest type of permanent magnet.
- They have the most magnetic power for their size.
- We say they have a high energy product.
- We use them in small things that need big power. Like your phone (mobile devices) and earbuds.
- They can be made in all different shapes. Like a circle, square, or ring.
- They can get different types of magnet coating to ensure they last super long!
Magnets can get too hot. The temperature where they stop working is called the Curie temperature. We make NdFeB magnets that work even when it’s hot.
Did you know that the world is moving toward green power? Our magnets help with Wind Turbine Magnets and Electric Car Magnets, and we care about recycling and sustainable practices, complying with UN Sustainable Development Goals.
What are they used for?
Electromagnet Uses
Electromagnets do big jobs!
MRI machines: These take pictures of your body. Doctors use them to see inside you.
Lifting Magnets: Big cranes use them to pick up heavy metal.
- Particle accelerators: Scientists use them in big machines to learn about tiny things. Like at CERN.
Permanent Magnet Uses
Permanent magnets are used in many things you use every day!
Motors: Electric cars use them. Electric Vehicles use strong magnets to go far. Even in Aerospace Engines, electromagnetic and Electric Propulsion Systems.
Generators: Wind turbines and wind power generation use strong magnets to make power.
Industrial Motors, servo motors, and many other Industrial equipment
Speakers: Your phone, TV, and radio use them to make sound. Speaker magnets are small but powerful.
Computers use magnets to Data Storage.
Why are Permanent Magnets so good?
There are many types:
- Hard vs Soft Magnets
- Paramagnetism
- Diamagnetism
But NdFeB magnets are the best!
NdFeB Magnets are super because:
- They are very, very strong.
- They last for years, so they don’t wear out.
- You can get them in all shapes and sizes, to custom fit your needs.
- Strong: They pack a powerful force! We can customize for your exact specs.
- They are good for the Earth. They help us make green power.
We can customize your magnets:
- Magnet Grade: N35, N38, N40, N42, N45, N48, N50, N52, N33M, N35M, N38M, N40M, N42M, N45M, N48M, N50M, N30H, N33H, N35H, N38H, N40H, N42H, N44H, N46H, N48H, N30SH, N33SH, N35SH, N38SH, N40SH, N42SH, N44SH, N46SH, N28UH, N30UH, N33UH, N35UH, N38UH, N40UH, N28EH, N30EH, N33EH, N35EH, N38EH, N25AH, N28AH, N30AH, N25BH.
- Different shapes: magnetic modules
- Shapes: neodymium ball magnets
