US Department of Defense Allocates $5.1 Million to Recover Rare Earths from E-Waste
2025-01-23
The project aims to restart an existing demonstration plant and support the operation of a commercial facility expected to produce 50 tons of rare earth oxides annually. Rare Resource Recycling Inc. focuses on recovering four key elements critical to the production of NdFeB magnets—praseodymium, neodymium, dysprosium, and terbium. NdFeB magnets are widely used in military platforms, missiles, submarines, and unmanned vehicles.
Dr. Laura Taylor-Kale, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy, stated that a resilient “mine-to-magnet” supply chain requires diverse rare earth sources. The recycling efforts by Rare Resource Recycling Inc. can help the US reduce dependence on foreign resources and prevent valuable materials from ending up in landfills. The company’s patented process can recover over 98% of rare earth materials from e-waste. Once the demonstration plant is restarted, Rare Resource Recycling Inc. plans to commission its commercial facility to supply raw materials to downstream metals and magnet industries.
This is one of six contracts, totaling $295.9 million, awarded by the Defense Production Act Procurement Office since the beginning of the 2025 fiscal year.
