Types of Magnets: Exploring Magnets and Magnetism
Table of Contents

What is a Magnet?
A magnet is something that pulls some metals. This pull is called magnetism. It’s like a magic trick, but it’s science! Magnets have a magnetic field. You can’t see it. But it’s there! The magnetic field has lines. These are magnetic field lines.
Magnets have two ends. They are called poles. One is the north pole. The other is the south pole. North and south like each other. They pull. North and north push away. So do south and south.
Kinds of Magnets
There are many kinds of magnets. These are the main ones.
- Permanent Magnets: These are always magnets.
- Temporary Magnets: These are magnets only sometimes.
- Electromagnets: These use power to be magnets.
- Ferrite magnets
- NdFeB magnets
- Alnico magnets
2.1 Permanent Magnets
These magnets are always “on.” They don’t stop being magnets. There are a few main types.
Neodymium (NdFeB) Magnets
These are the strongest magnets. We make these! They are used in many things.
- Cars: Electric cars use them. They help the wheels go!
- Wind Power: Wind turbines use them. They make power from the wind. We make great magnets.
- Data Storage. Hard disk drives (HDD) need magnets to work.
- NdFeB magnets are used in magnetic resonance.
- Phones: They are in your phone.
NdFeB magnets are the best! For very strong magnets, look at our Customized NdFeB Magnets.
Magnet Type | How Strong (BHmax) | How Hot Can It Get? (Curie Temp) |
---|---|---|
NdFeB | 35-52 | 80-310°C |
Ferrite/Ceramic | 3-5 | 450°C |
We like NdFeB a lot. We are good at making them. We even make Magnet Coating to make them last longer!
Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) Magnets
These are strong. They can get very hot.
- Planes: They are used in planes.
Ferrite/Ceramic Magnets
These are not as strong. But they are cheap.
- Speakers: They are in many speakers.
- These magnets use magnetic stripes (cards).
- Fridges: They stick to your fridge.
- MRI machines.
- Toys: You probably have them.
Alnico Magnets
These are old. But they are good with heat.
- Guitar pickups
- Sensors
- Music: They are used in some music things.
2.2 Temporary Magnets
These magnets are not always “on.” They only pull when something else is there. Like a metal that gets pulled.
2.3 Electromagnets
These magnets use power. You can turn them on and off.
- Big Cranes: They lift heavy things.
- MRI: They help doctors see inside you.
How to Pick the Right Magnet
3.1. Magnetic resonance angiography
It helps to know about magnet therapy. Here are the simple facts you need.
- Coercivity (Hc): How hard is it to stop being a magnet?
- Temperature Stability: Can it work when hot or cold?
Energy product (BHmax: How strong is it?
Magnetic permeability is imporatn.
3.2 What Do You Need?
Cars: Electric cars need strong magnets. NdFeB is good.
- Medical: MRI needs big magnets.
- Toys: Small, flexible magnets are good.
- Magnetic flux leakage should be low.

Why NdFeB Magnets are the Best
NdFeB magnets are great! Here’s why.
- Super Strong: They are the strongest.
- Small: They can be very small. But still strong.
- magnetic resonanceis used for many things.
- Shapes: We can make them in many shapes. Like blocks. Or discs.
- Magnetic damping is important for a smooth operation.
- Coating: We can coat them. This stops rust. Learn about Magnet Grade to make them easy to use.
- They show magnetoresistance
- They are used in magnetic switches.
We made some NdFeB magnets that help, wind turbines make more power!
Step-by-step instructions: How to buy ndfeb magnets
- Pick Specs.
